North Kinangop Hospital

The Hospital started on 22nd August 1965 in an old colonial farm house, which was given by the first president of Kenya Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to the late Bishop of Nyeri Diocese Bishop Gatimu with an aim of starting a Hospital in Nyandarua Zone.
It began as a health center with only 25 beds under the management of Padua priests and the religious congregation of Little Daughters of St. Joseph. Il has expanded and today it has over 300 beds.
It provides health care services to a catchment population of around 180,000 people with services of 4th level and some specialized care at 5th level in orthopedic, gynaecology, urology, ENT, oculist, and up-to-date diagnostic.

THE LONG TERM OBJECTIVES

  • Provision of more specialized services (Paediatric, ICU, Theatre Facilities) and consolidation of the existing ones.
  • Enhancement of quality care through improvement of customer care, computerized patients history storage and retrieval, approved CME curriculum for clinical and nursing staff.
  • Affordability of Inpatient and Outpatient treatment in growing partnership with NHIF, other health insurances and community initiatives through enhancement of self supporting capabilities.
  • Strengthening staff motivation with new housing units, further training and rewards.

OUR CURRENT PROJECTS

  • Building of two more fully equipped theatres and one sterilization room
  • Study of ICU facilities and services
  • Computerization of patients archive for easy storage and consultation by the clinicians
  • Up date US services with a new ultrasound machine
  • Improvement of reception facilities, entrance ways, public washrooms
  • Prepare a specific room for CD4 and Eliza tests
  • Complete 8 staff quarters and review financial remuneration for staff
  • Spirituality and professional seminars training offered to staff
  • Utilize the collected rain water for irrigation and utilize the marginal agricultural land in tree planting

We appreciate that every development of the Hospital and its appreciation by patients and their families relies mostly on the commitment of the staff and volunteers in various department, their team work and professionalism. In a special way we recognize the role of the religious Sisters, of the volunteer cooperation and various collaborating institutions. We pledge to work closely with the MOH in planning and executing the medical care in our area. A memorandum of understanding has been signed between us and we hope that it will greatly impact in our joint effort.

The hospital in numbers

The output: 53,000 patients visited annually in the outpatient department: MCH, ginaecologic clinic, orthopedic clinic, casualty, dental clinic, oculistic, x-ray, CT-scan, US, CCC, ENT clinic, epyleptic, dyabetic and HB pressure clinic.

7,000 patients admitted annually with an average of 6 days hospitalization and 62% bed occupancy. Minor and major surgical operations are 2,600 per year in various specialization: orthopedy, ENT, ginaecology, urology, oculistic, abdominal, dental, endoscopy.

The staff includes 2 consultants, 4 Medical Officers, 2 COs anaestetist, 6 Registered CO, 15 technicians in various departments, 70 nurses, 30 wards assistants and 50 service providers (office, security, kitchen, laundry, compound, drivers, etc).

There are also more than 50 visiting doctors volunteering in specialized health care supporting each year the hospital programme. 66% of the admitted patients are NHIF card holder.
The present rate of increased patients admission is at 6% per year; the hospital functions also as referral centre for some patients from Nyahururu, Naivasha and Nairobi.

Staff

Maintaining the standards and quality of health care at NKCH is made possible by a team of over 200 staff, dedicated , caring and ever listening to clients individual needs.

Management acknowledges the contribution made by each staff, some with over 30 years of loyal service at NKCH.

Contribution made by visiting specialists and other volunteers have continued to stare the hospital standards to higher heights.
